Who we are:
In the early 1930's Jiro Murai, a young philosopher, was summoned by the Emperor of Japan. He was given permission to study the Kojiki (The Record of Ancient Things) in the Imperial Archives of Japan. He continued to use and learn what he later called Jin Shin Jyutsu®.
Jiro Murai was raised in a family with a long-standing medical background at the turn of the century. In his rebellious youthfulness, not wanting to follow family tradition, he studied philosophy until he was diagnosed with a terminal illness.
This facilitated him to focus on his own personal healing and understanding of these Ancient Teachings. After an amazing recovery from his illness, Jiro re-introduced the world to these teachings as Jin Shin Jyutsu® (The Art of God and Man).
After World War II, Jiro sought out a young Japanese-American interpreter, Mary Burmeister, to bring this art as a gift to America. Mary studied with Jiro for several years and later became a master of Jin Shin Jyutsu®. She wrote the first English language texts on Jin Shin and held classes in many countries. With her family, Mary founded Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc.®
Pamela Markarian Smith who was struggling with an unknown and potentially critical condition, learned of Mary and Jin Shin Jyutsu® in the early 1960's. She took one of Mary's first classes in Los Angeles and realized she had found her life's work.
After moving to Sonoma County, California in 1973, she continued her practice, giving treatments and introducing people to this Art through Introduction and Self-Help classes. In the late 1970s, Mary came to Bodega Bay to give her first class in Northern California. Thereafter, Pamela continued to coordinate annual Jin Shin Jyutsu® seminars for Mary during the next thirteen years.
It was out of mutual respect, love, and dedication to the sharing of this Art that Pamela eventually became one of the four original teachers chosen by Mary and her son, David Burmeister of Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc.®
With over 40 years of study, practice, and research, Pamela has taught many levels of Jin Shin Jyutsu® from the Beginning Basic Class to the Advanced Practitioner Instruction.
In 1992, Pamela founded the Jin Shin Institute as a means to share her understanding of Jin Shin Jyutsu®. She dedicated this creative endeavor to her beloved teacher, Mary Burmeister, and to the teachings of Jiro Murai, with eternal gratitude to the Creator for this priceless gift.
